SECTION 01 — BIOGRAPHY
SECTION 02 — LYRICAL BALLADS (1798) — THE MANIFESTO
“The Lyrical Ballads changed the course of English poetry forever.” — Literary Historians
১৭৯৮ সালের প্রথম সংস্করণে Coleridge-এর "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" ছিল। এই Preface-এ Wordsworth কবিতাকে সংজ্ঞায়িত করলেন: "Poetry is the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings: it takes its origin from emotion recollected in tranquility."
Key Fact: Preface to Lyrical Ballads is written by Wordsworth (not Coleridge). This is a common exam trap.

THE STORY IN FULL — NARRATIVE STYLE
The Setting of the Frame Story
Part I — The Voyage Begins (যাত্রার শুরু)
Part I — The Unforgivable Crime (মহাপাপ)
“God save thee, ancient Mariner! / From the fiends, that plague thee thus! / Why look'st thou so? — With my cross-bow / I shot the ALBATROSS.” — The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Part I
Part II — The Curse Begins (অভিশাপের শুরু)
“Water, water, every where, / And all the boards did shrink; / Water, water, every where, / Nor any drop to drink.” — The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Part II
Part III — Death and Life-in-Death (মৃত্যু ও জীবন্মৃত্যু)
“Alone, alone, all, all alone, / Alone on a wide wide sea! / And never a saint took pity on / My soul in agony.” — The Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Part IV
Part IV — The Blessing of the Water-Snakes (সাপের আশীর্বাদ)
Part V — Supernatural Assistance (অতিপ্রাকৃত সাহায্য)
Part VI-VII — Return and Penance (প্রত্যাবর্তন ও প্রায়শ্চিত্ত)
পরদিন ভোরে তিনি "sadder and wiser man" হিসেবে জেগে উঠলেন।
“He prayeth best, who loveth best / All things both great and small; / For the dear God who loveth us, / He made and loveth all.” — The Rime of the Ancient Mariner — The Moral
KEY QUOTES — ANCIENT MARINER
Quote | Significance |
"Water, water, every where, / Nor any drop to drink." | Irony of abundance without availability; symbol of spiritual desolation |
"Alone, alone, all, all alone." | Repetition (Epizeuxis) showing total isolation; also example of Assonance |
"He prayeth best, who loveth best..." | The moral of the poem — love of all living things |
"I shot the ALBATROSS." | The central act of sin; ALBATROSS in capitals for emphasis |
"A sadder and a wiser man, / He rose the morrow morn." | The Wedding Guest's transformation after hearing the tale |
"Like one, that on a lonesome road / Doth walk in fear and dread..." | Gothic atmosphere; psychological horror |
SECTION 04 — KUBLA KHAN (1797 / Published 1816)
Composed | 1797 (in an opium-induced dream/sleep) |
Published | 1816 (19 years after composition) |
Form | Romantic lyric; unfinished / fragment poem |
Lines | 54 lines divided into 3 parts |
Setting | Xanadu — Kubla Khan's mythical palace in China |
Origin | Composed in a dream after reading about Kubla Khan's summer palace "Xanadu" / "Janadu" |
Interrupted | A "person from Porlock" arrived during composition; poem remained unfinished |
Theme | Creative imagination, the unconscious, paradise and pleasure, the power of art |
THE ORIGIN STORY — HOW KUBLA KHAN WAS BORN
কিন্তু তখনই এলেন "a person from Porlock" — পাশের গ্রাম Porlock থেকে এক ব্যবসায়িক বিষয়ে।
"The person from Porlock" পরবর্তীতে সাহিত্যে একটি idiom হয়ে গেছে — সৃজনশীলতায় বাধা দেওয়ার প্রতীক।
STANZA-BY-STANZA ANALYSIS
(Lines 1-11)
In Xanadu did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure-dome decree:
Where Alph, the sacred river, ran
Through caverns measureless to man
Down to a sunless sea.
"Caverns measureless to man" — মানুষের বোধের বাইরে গভীরতা।
(Lines 11-30)
So twice five miles of fertile ground
With walls and towers were girdled round;
And there were gardens bright with sinuous rills,
Where blossomed many an incense-bearing tree;
And here were forests ancient as the hills,
Enfolding sunny spots of greenery.
(Lines 14-28)
But oh! that deep romantic chasm which slanted
Down the green hill athwart a cedarn cover!
A savage place! as holy and enchanted
As e'er beneath a waning moon was haunted
By woman wailing for her demon-lover!
"Woman wailing for her demon-lover" — Gothic Romanticism-এর সবচেয়ে শক্তিশালী image।
And from this chasm, with ceaseless turmoil seething,
As if this earth in fast thick pants were breathing,
A mighty fountain momently was forced:
(Lines 29-36)
The shadow of the dome of pleasure
Floated midway on the waves;
Where was heard the mingled measure
From the fountain and the caves.
It was a miracle of rare device,
A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!
⭐ বিশ্লেষণ: "A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!"
Part 3 — The Abyssinian Maid এবং কবির Vision (Lines 37-54)
A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw:
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.
And all who heard should see them there,
And all should cry, Beware! Beware!
His flashing eyes, his floating hair!
Weave a circle round him thrice,
And close your eyes with holy dread,
For he on honey-dew hath fed,
And drunk the milk of Paradise.
"Weave a circle round him thrice" — প্রাচীন magic ritual, কবিকে রক্ষার জন্য।
“A sunny pleasure-dome with caves of ice!” — Kubla Khan — the central paradox of the poem
THEMES IN KUBLA KHAN
Kubla Khan-এর প্রধান themes:
2. Pleasure and Pain: "Pleasure-dome" কিন্তু তার নিচে "caves of ice" — সুখ সবসময় যন্ত্রণার সাথে যুক্ত।
3. The Unconscious Mind: Opium-induced dream
4. The Unfinished Ideal:
SECTION 05 — CHRISTABEL (1797–1800 / Published 1816)
Composed | Part I: 1797; Part II: 1800 |
Published | 1816 (same volume as Kubla Khan) |
Form | Gothic narrative poem; unfinished |
Metre | Christabel metre — stress-based (accentual), innovative |
Setting | Medieval castle in a dark forest |
Characters | Christabel (heroine), Geraldine (vampire-like villain), Sir Leoline (father) |
Theme | Good vs Evil, Innocence corrupted, Supernatural evil, Gothic horror |
Innovation | Introduced stress-based metre that influenced later poets like Scott and Tennyson |
THE STORY — NARRATIVE STYLE
রাতে Christabel-এর বিছানায় শুয়ে Geraldine তার জামা খোলে — এবং তার পাশ ও বুক উন্মোচিত হয় ("Behold! her bosom and half her side — A sight to dream of, not to tell!")
“Behold! her bosom and half her side — / A sight to dream of, not to tell!” — Christabel, Part I
SECTION 06 — DEJECTION: AN ODE (1802)
Published | 1802, Morning Post (Wordsworth's wedding day) |
Form | Irregular ode; 8 stanzas |
Addressee | Originally addressed to Sara Hutchinson (Wordsworth's future sister-in-law) |
Theme | Loss of creative power, depression, inability to feel joy |
Context | Coleridge's response to Wordsworth's "Immortality Ode" |
“I see them all so excellently fair, / I see, not feel, how beautiful they are!” — Dejection: An Ode
"I see, not feel" — এই দুটি শব্দে Coleridge বললেন তার পুরো ট্র্যাজেডি।
“O Lady! we receive but what we give, / And in our life alone does Nature live.” — Dejection: An Ode
SECTION 07 — FROST AT MIDNIGHT (1798)
Published | 1798 |
Form | Conversation Poem (Conversational Poem); 74 lines; blank verse |
Setting | Late night; Coleridge's cottage with baby son Hartley sleeping |
Theme | Nature as divine teacher, childhood, hope for son's future |
Tone | Meditative, tender, hopeful |
“Therefore all seasons shall be sweet to thee... / The lovely shapes and sounds intelligible / Of that eternal language, which thy God / Utters...” — Frost at Midnight
SECTION 08 — BIOGRAPHIA LITERARIA (1817)
Published | 1817 |
Type | Literary autobiography and criticism |
Chapters | 23 chapters |
Key Topics | Imagination, Fancy, Wordsworth's poetry, Shakespeare criticism |
Importance | One of the greatest works of literary criticism in English |
IMAGINATION vs. FANCY — THE MOST IMPORTANT DISTINCTION
Imagination (কল্পনাশক্তি) | Fancy (কল্পনার খেলা) |
Fancy |
"WILLING SUSPENSION OF DISBELIEF"
“That willing suspension of disbelief for the moment, which constitutes poetic faith.” — Biographia Literaria, Chapter XIV
COLERIDGE ON WORDSWORTH

SECTION 10 — COLERIDGE AS A LITERARY CRITIC
"Shakespeare's judgment equal to his genius" — এই মন্তব্য বিখ্যাত।
2. Imagination vs Fancy: (দেখুন Biographia Literaria section)
“No man was ever yet a great poet, without being at the same time a profound philosopher.” — Coleridge, Biographia Literaria
