SECTION 01 — BIOGRAPHY
তিনি বললেন: "He has actually trained himself and modernized himself on his own."
তাই Eliot The Waste Land Pound-কে উৎসর্গ করেছিলেন: "il miglior fabbro" (the better craftsman)।
তাঁর বিখ্যাত আত্মপ্রকাশ: "I am an Anglo-Catholic in religion, a classicist in literature, and a royalist in politics" — এই তিনটি বিশেষণে তিনি নিজেকে সংজ্ঞায়িত করেছিলেন।
SECTION 02 — ELIOT'S CRITICAL CONCEPTS
1. Objective Correlative
উৎস: "Hamlet and His Problems" (1919) প্রবন্ধে প্রথম ব্যবহৃত।
Definition: A set of objects, a situation, a chain of events which shall be the formula of that particular emotion; such that when the external facts, which must terminate in sensory experience, are given, the emotion is immediately evoked.
⚠ Exam Trap: Eliot called Hamlet "the Mona Lisa of literature" — interesting but not a work of art due to lack of objective correlative.
2. Impersonality Theory (Theory of Impersonal Poetry)
উৎস: "Tradition and Individual Talent" (1919) প্রবন্ধ।
“Poetry is not a turning loose of emotion, but an escape from emotion; it is not the expression of personality, but an escape from personality.” — T.S. Eliot, Tradition and Individual Talent
Catalyst Analogy: When two gases are mixed in the presence of a filament of platinum, they form sulphurous acid. The platinum remains unchanged. Similarly, the poet's mind is the shred of platinum — it catalyzes emotions and experiences but remains itself impersonal.
3. Dissociation of Sensibility
উৎস: "The Metaphysical Poets" (1921) প্রবন্ধ।
এই বিচ্ছিন্নতাই "Dissociation of Sensibility।"
Unified Sensibility (Before 17th c.) | Dissociation of Sensibility (After 17th c.) |
John Donne, George Herbert | Milton, Dryden, Pope |
Thought and feeling combined | Thought and feeling separated |
Metaphysical Poets | Neoclassical and later Romantic poets |
Example: "A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning" (Donne) | Example: Much of Tennyson, Browning |
4. Tradition and Individual Talent
“The most individual parts of a poet's work may be those in which the dead poets, his ancestors, assert their immortality most vigorously.” — Tradition and Individual Talent
5. Dissociation of Sensibility vs Unified Sensibility — Summary
⚠ Exam: "Dissociation of Sensibility" is from the essay "The Metaphysical Poets" (1921). "Objective Correlative" is from "Hamlet and His Problems" (1919). Do NOT mix them up.
SECTION 03 — THE LOVE SONG OF J. ALFRED PRUFROCK (1915)
Published | 1915 (in Poetry magazine); 1917 (in Prufrock and Other Observations) |
Form | Dramatic monologue; 131 lines; free verse |
Speaker | J. Alfred Prufrock — a middle-aged, neurotic, socially paralysed man |
Epigraph | From Dante's Inferno (Canto 27) — Guido da Montefeltro speaking |
Opening Line | "Let us go then, you and I," |
Theme | Modern alienation, paralysis, fear of rejection, futility, aging, inadequacy |
Technique | Stream of consciousness, interior monologue, allusion, fragmentation |
Reference | Hamlet, Lazarus, Michelangelo, John the Baptist, mermaids |
THE POEM — FULL ANALYSIS
Opening — "Let us go then, you and I" (Lines 1-14)
Let us go then, you and I,
When the evening is spread out against the sky
Like a patient etherized upon a table;
বিশ্লেষণ: "You and I" — কে এই দুজন? সন্ধ্যাকে তুলনা করা হয়েছে "a patient etherized upon a table" — এই চমকপ্রদ Simile Romantic tradition-এর বিরুদ্ধে এক বিদ্রোহ।
The Drawing Room — Yellow Fog (Lines 15-36)
The yellow fog that rubs its back upon the window-panes,
The yellow smoke that rubs its muzzle on the window-panes,
Licked its tongue into the corners of the evening,
"Do I dare?" — The Central Paralysis (Lines 37-74)
And indeed there will be time
To wonder, "Do I dare?" and, "Do I dare?"
Time to turn back and descend the stair,
With a bald spot in the middle of my hair —
(They will say: "How his hair is growing thin!")
বিশ্লেষণ: "Do I dare?"
"I am not Prince Hamlet" (Lines 111-119)
No! I am not Prince Hamlet, nor was meant to be;
Am an attendant lord, one that will do
To swell a progress, start a scene or two,
The Mermaids — Closing (Lines 120-131)
I have heard the mermaids singing, each to each.
I do not think that they will sing to me.
We have lingered in the chambers of the sea
By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown
Till human voices wake us, and we drown.
কিন্তু "human voices wake us, and we drown" — বাস্তব জীবনের শব্দে জেগে উঠলে তিনি ডুবে মরেন।
“In the room the women come and go / Talking of Michelangelo.” — Prufrock — the futility of social life
“I have measured out my life with coffee spoons.” — Prufrock — a life of trivial routine
SECTION 04 — THE WASTE LAND (1922)
Published | 1922 (in The Criterion; then as a book) |
Dedicated to | "il miglior fabbro" — Ezra Pound (the better craftsman) |
Form | 5 sections; 434 lines; free verse with varied metre |
Languages used | English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Greek, Sanskrit (Upanishads) |
Sources | Dante, Shakespeare, Spenser, Baudelaire, Ovid, Bible, Upanishads, Tarot cards, Grail legend |
Setting | Post-WWI London and various mythological landscapes |
Central Symbol | The Waste Land = the spiritual barrenness of modern civilisation |
Epigraph | From Petronius’ Satyricon: Sibyl of Cumae wants to die (immortal but aged) |
THE FIVE SECTIONS — DETAILED ANALYSIS
Section I — "The Burial of the Dead"
April is the cruellest month, breeding
Lilacs out of the dead land, mixing
Memory and desire, stirring
Dull roots with spring rain.
"The Burial of the Dead" — শিরোনামটি Anglican Church-এর burial service থেকে নেওয়া।
“Unreal City, / Under the brown fog of a winter dawn, / A crowd flowed over London Bridge, so many, / I had not thought death had undone so many.” — The Waste Land, I — Dante's Inferno echo
Section II — "A Game of Chess"
"A Game of Chess" — দুটি দৃশ্যের সমন্বয়।
Section শেষ হয় বিখ্যাত Shakespeare-এর Ophelia-র স্মরণে: "Good night, ladies, good night, sweet ladies, good night, good night."
Section III — "The Fire Sermon"
Eliot বললেন: "Tiresias is the most important personage in the poem, uniting all the rest."
Section IV — "Death by Water"
Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep sea swell
And the profit and loss.
"Death by Water" Fisher King legend-এর সাথে যুক্ত।
Section V — "What the Thunder Said"
Thunder says "DA" —
“Shantih shantih shantih” — The Waste Land — closing words from Upanishads (Peace which passeth understanding)
THE WASTE LAND — STRUCTURE AT A GLANCE
Section | Title & Key Theme |
I | "The Burial of the Dead" — Spiritual death of modern life; April cruelty; London as Unreal City |
II | "A Game of Chess" — Loveless relationships across class; marital sterility |
III | "The Fire Sermon" — Lust and degraded sexuality; Thames pollution; Tiresias |
IV | "Death by Water" — Phlebas; drowning as potential rebirth; 10 lines only |
V | "What the Thunder Said" — DA DA DA from Upanishads; Datta, Dayadhvam, Damyata; Shantih |
SECTION 05 — THE HOLLOW MEN (1925)
Published | 1925 |
Form | Five-part poem; free verse; 98 lines |
Epigraphs | 1) "Mistah Kurtz — he dead" (Conrad's Heart of Darkness); 2) "A penny for the Old Guy" (Guy Fawkes Day) |
Theme | Spiritual emptiness, inability to act or love, purgatory, impotence |
Tone | Bleak, despairing, ritualistic |
Overview
The Hollow Men — The Waste Land-এর পরবর্তী ধাপ।
We are the hollow men
We are the stuffed men
Leaning together
Headpiece filled with straw. Alas!
“This is the way the world ends / Not with a bang but a whimper.” — The Hollow Men — the most famous closing lines in modern poetry
পুরাণের "The Shadow" and "The Valley of dying stars" image ব্যবহার করে Eliot দেখালেন এই মানুষেরা না-বাঁচার মতো বেঁচে আছে — এক purgatory-র মতো অস্তিত্বে। Lord's Prayer-এর fragmented version ("For Thine is the Kingdom... For Thine is...")
SECTION 06 — ASH WEDNESDAY (1930)
Published | 1930 (complete); parts published separately 1927–29 |
Form | 6-part poem; free verse with liturgical rhythm |
Context | Written after Eliot's conversion to Anglican Christianity (1927) |
Allusions | Dante's Purgatorio, Bible (Ezekiel, Isaiah), Anglican liturgy, Ave Maria |
Theme | Spiritual conversion, penitence, hope and doubt, renunciation of worldly things |
Overview
Because I do not hope to turn again
Because I do not hope
Because I do not hope to turn
"Because I do not hope to turn again" — Cavalcanti-র ইটালিয়ান কবিতার প্রথম লাইনের echo। পুনরাবৃত্তি (anaphora) — "Because I do not hope" — penitential prayer-এর ছন্দ। এটি একটি Lenten poem।
“Teach us to care and not to care / Teach us to sit still.” — Ash Wednesday
"Teach us to care and not to care" — এই paradox Eliot-এর spiritual journey-র সার।
⚠ Exam Trap: "Ash Wednesday" is a POEM, NOT a play. Cocktail Party is a play.
SECTION 07 — FOUR QUARTETS (1943)
Published | 1943 (complete); individual quartets 1936–1942 |
Structure | 4 poems × 5 movements each = 20 movements total |
Named after | Four places Eliot visited; and Four elements (Earth, Air, Water, Fire) |
Form | Free verse with some strict metre; musical structure like a string quartet |
Theme | Time, eternity, memory, redemption, the nature of history, God |
Quartet | Place / Element / Theme |
Burnt Norton (1936) | Gloucestershire garden / Air / The nature of time; "the still point of the turning world" |
East Coker (1940) | Somerset village (Eliot's ancestral home) / Earth / "In my beginning is my end" |
The Dry Salvages (1941) | Rock formation off Massachusetts coast / Water / Time and the sea; River as God |
Little Gidding (1942) | Anglican community in Huntingdonshire / Fire / History, redemption; "All shall be well" |
“Time present and time past / Are both perhaps present in time future / And time future contained in time past.” — Burnt Norton, Four Quartets — opening lines
“In my beginning is my end.” — East Coker, Four Quartets
“We shall not cease from exploration / And the end of all our exploring / Will be to arrive where we started / And know the place for the first time.” — Little Gidding, Four Quartets
SECTION 08 — GERONTION (1920)
Published | 1920 (in Ara Vos Prec; later in Poems 1920) |
Form | Dramatic monologue; 75 lines; free verse |
Speaker | "Gerontion" (from Greek: a little old man) |
Theme | Old age, spiritual decay, lost faith, post-WWI despair, inability to act |
“Here I am, an old man in a dry month, / Being read to by a boy, waiting for rain.” — Gerontion — opening lines
"Dry month" এবং "waiting for rain" — আবার সেই Waste Land-এর imagery। Spiritual aridity।
SECTION 09 — PLAYS OF T.S. ELIOT
Murder in the Cathedral (1935) —
Published/Performed | 1935, Canterbury Festival |
Form | Verse drama; two parts + Interlude |
Subject | Murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket in Canterbury Cathedral (1170) |
Characters | Thomas Becket, Four Tempters, Four Knights, Chorus of Women of Canterbury |
Theme | Martyrdom, the will of God vs worldly power, spiritual integrity |
“The last temptation is the greatest treason: / To do the right deed for the wrong reason.” — Murder in the Cathedral — Becket's key insight
"To do the right deed for the wrong reason" — এটি কবিতার সবচেয়ে গুরুত্বপূর্ণ line।
The Cocktail Party (1949)
Type | Drawing room comedy / verse drama |
Setting | A London cocktail party |
Theme | Spiritual emptiness behind social facades; different paths to redemption |
