SECTION 01 — BIOGRAPHY
১৮৬৭ সালে তিনি তাঁর প্রথম উপন্যাস "The Poor Man and the Lady" লিখলেন, কিন্তু প্রকাশক প্রত্যাখ্যান করলেন।
১৮৭৪ সালে "Far from the Madding Crowd" তাঁকে সত্যিকারের সাফল্য এনে দিল। এরপর একের পর এক masterpiece: The Return of the Native (1878), The Mayor of Casterbridge (1886), Tess of the D'Urbervilles (1891)।
SECTION 02 — HARDY'S WESSEX — THE FICTIONAL UNIVERSE
Fictional Name (Wessex) | Real Place |
Casterbridge | Dorchester (Dorset) |
Egdon Heath | The heathland of Dorset (composite) |
Shaston | Shaftesbury |
Sandbourne | Bournemouth |
Melchester | Salisbury |
Budmouth | Weymouth |
Weatherbury | Puddletown |
Christminster | Oxford |
Wintoncester | Winchester |
Egdon Heath (Return of the Native-এ) প্রায় protagonist। The moors, the fields, the seasons — সবকিছু Hardy-র tragic vision-এর অংশ।

THE STORY — PHASE BY PHASE NARRATIVE
Phase I — "The Maiden" — Marlott-এ Tess-এর সরল জীবন
Phase I — Alec D'Urberville:
Hardy এই দৃশ্যটি সরাসরি বর্ণনা করেননি — শুধু বলেছেন: "why was it that upon this beautiful feminine tissue... there should have been traced such a coarse pattern?"
“Why was it that upon this beautiful feminine tissue... there should have been traced such a coarse pattern as it was doomed to receive?” — Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Phase I
Phase II — "Maiden No More" — কলঙ্কিত হয়ে ফেরা
Phase III — "The Rally" — Talbothays Dairy: Angel Clare
Phase IV — "The Consequence" —
তিনি বললেন: "You were one person; now you are another."
“I thought, Angel, that you loved me — me, my very self! If there is anything in me you did not love, then... it is not my fault!” — Tess to Angel
Phase V-VI — "The Woman Pays" — কষ্টের জীবন ও Alec-এর প্রত্যাবর্তন
Tragic End
কিন্তু বললেন — "Too late, too late!"
“Justice was done, and the President of the Immortals, in Aeschylean phrase, had ended his sport with Tess.” — Tess of the D'Urbervilles — the devastating final line
"President of the Immortals" = ঈশ্বর বা নিয়তি, যে Tess-কে নিয়ে "sport" (খেলা) করেছে।

❁ FAR FROM THE MADDING CROWD (1874) — NARRATIVE
Published | 1874 (serialised in Cornhill Magazine) |
Setting | Weatherbury (= Puddletown, Dorset) |
Theme | Love, independence, marriage, class, pastoral life |
Title Source | Thomas Gray's Elegy — "Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife" |
Characters | Bathsheba Everdene, Gabriel Oak, Sgt. Frank Troy, William Boldwood |
“When Farmer Oak smiled, the corners of his mouth spread till they were within an unimportant distance of his ears.” — Far from the Madding Crowd — Gabriel Oak's description
⚠ Title Origin: "Far from the Madding Crowd" — from Thomas Gray's Elegy: "Far from the madding crowd's ignoble strife." This is a frequent exam question.
❁ THE RETURN OF THE NATIVE (1878) — NARRATIVE
Published | 1878 (serialised in Belgravia) |
Setting | Egdon Heath — a vast, dark, primeval heathland (Hardy's most famous setting) |
Time | Approximately one year and a day (November 5 to November 6) |
Theme | Aspiration vs environment, modernity vs tradition, passion, fate |
Characters | Eustacia Vye, Clym Yeobright, Thomasin Yeobright, Damon Wildeve, Diggory Venn |
Egdon Heath | Almost a character itself — dark, indifferent, ancient, inescapable |
"Egdon Heath lay like a man asleep" — কবিতার মতো এই বাক্য দিয়ে Hardy তার সবচেয়ে বিখ্যাত setting পরিচয় করিয়ে দেন।
Clym Yeobright — "the Native" — Paris
“Egdon Heath was like the face of a human creature — with the qualities of age, indifference and the sublimity of a sea.” — The Return of the Native
❁ THE MAYOR OF CASTERBRIDGE (1886) — NARRATIVE
Published | 1886 (serialised 1884–85 in The Graphic) |
Setting | Casterbridge (= Dorchester) |
Theme | Pride, guilt, self-destruction, fate, ambition, redemption |
Characters | Michael Henchard, Donald Farfrae, Susan, Elizabeth-Jane, Lucetta |
Key Event | Henchard sells his wife and daughter at a fair — the opening shock |
Subtitle | "The Life and Death of a Man of Character" |
তাঁর will-এ লেখা: "Do not let anyone mourn for me or remember me."
“Do not let anyone mourn for me or remember me. Let no man remember me. To this I put my name.” — Michael Henchard's Will — The Mayor of Casterbridge
❁ JUDE THE OBSCURE (1895) — NARRATIVE
Published | 1895 (serialised 1894–95 in Harper's New Monthly) |
Hardy's own words | Intended to show "a deadly war waged between flesh and spirit" |
Setting | Marygreen, Christminster (= Oxford), Shaston, Aldbrickham |
Theme | Class inequality, education, marriage laws, religion, sexual freedom |
Characters | Jude Fawley, Sue Bridehead, Arabella Donn, Richard Phillotson, Little Father Time |
Reception | Condemned as immoral; bishops burnt it; Hardy called it "Jude the Obscene" |
Aftermath | Hardy stopped writing novels after this; turned entirely to poetry |
Christminster-এর একজন Principal তাকে চিঠিতে বলল: "remain in your own sphere।"
ঘরে রেখে গেল একটি নোট: "Done because we are too menny।"
“Done because we are too menny.” — Little Father Time's note — Jude the Obscure's most harrowing moment
⚠ Exam: Jude the Obscure was Hardy's LAST novel (1895). After the hostile reception, he never wrote another novel. His last 30 years were devoted entirely to poetry.

SECTION 08 — HARDY AS POET
The Darkling Thrush (1900)
Published | Dec 31, 1900 — the last day of the 19th century |
Form | 4 stanzas; 8 lines each; ABABCDCD rhyme |
Theme | Despair vs hope; the end of an era; the human spirit |
I leant upon a coppice gate
When Frost was spectre-grey,
And Winter's dregs made desolate
The weakening eye of day.
At once a voice arose among
The bleak twigs overhead
In a full-hearted evensong
Of joy illimited;
An aged thrush, frail, gaunt, and small,
In blast-beruffled plume,
Had chosen thus to fling his soul
Upon the growing gloom.
"Some blessed Hope, whereof he knew / And I was unaware।"
Neutral Tones (1867, published 1898)
We stood by a pond that winter day,
And the sun was white, as though chidden of God,
And a few leaves lay on the starving sod;
They had fallen from an ash, and were gray.
The Convergence of the Twain (1912)
"The Immanent Will" (Hardy-র নিয়তির নাম) এই দুটিকে একসাথে তৈরি করেছিল মিলিত হওয়ার জন্য।
Channel Firing (1914)
World War I শুরুর আগে লেখা। Dark irony।

The Dynasts (1904–1908)
SECTION 09 — HARDY'S PHILOSOPHY & CRITICAL ANALYSIS
Hardy as a Pessimist
Hardy-র জগতে: নিয়তি অন্ধ ("Immanent Will" / "President of the Immortals"), সমাজ নিষ্ঠুর, মানুষের প্রচেষ্টা প্রায়ই বিফল হয়।
