NUMBER

১. Number কী? — সংজ্ঞা ও মূল ধারণা

Number বলতে Noun বা Pronoun Singular (একবচন) না Plural (বহুবচন) তা বোঝায়। Number অনুযায়ী Verb-ও পরিবর্তিত হয়।

এই অধ্যায়ে Number ও Subject-Verb Agreement (বিষয়-ক্রিয়া সংগতি) — উভয় একসাথে পড়া হবে।

২. Subject-Verb Agreement-এর ২৫টি নিয়ম

Rule 1: 'and' দিয়ে যুক্ত দুটি Subject → Plural Verb

Formula: [Sub₁ + and + Sub₂] → Plural Verb

Ram and Shyam are coming. ✓ | He and she are best friends. ✓

Rule 2: একই ব্যক্তি বা ধারণা 'and' দিয়ে → Singular Verb

একজনের দুটো পরিচয় বা অবিচ্ছেদ্য বিষয় একটি হলে Singular Verb।

My friend, philosopher and guide has come. ✓ (same person, three roles)

Slow and steady wins the race. ✓ | Fish and chips is my favourite dish. ✓

Rule 3: 'as well as / with / along with / besides / except / rather than' → 1st Subject অনুযায়ী Verb

এই phrases দিয়ে যুক্ত হলে Verb সবসময় প্রথম Subject অনুযায়ী হয়।

Ram as well as his parents is coming. ✓ | The captain along with the sailors was drowned. ✓

Rule 4: একই Article বা Possessive দিয়ে 'and' → একজন ব্যক্তি → Singular Verb

A white and black gown was bought. ✓ (একটি গাউন) | But: The director and the producer have come. ✓ (দুজন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তি)

Rule 5: 'Either...or / Neither...nor / Not only...but also / Or / Nor' → Nearest Subject অনুযায়ী Verb

Formula: Nearest Subject → Verb। অর্থাৎ 'or/nor/but also'-এর পরের Subject দেখুন।

⛔ 'Neither of' → 'None of' | 'Either of' → 'One of'

Neither of his four sons looked after him. ✗ → None of his four sons looked after him. ✓

Either of the five members is at fault. ✗ → One of the five members is at fault. ✓

'Neither of' মাত্র দুজনের মধ্যে কাউকে না বোঝায় | 'None of' তিন বা তার বেশি।

Rule 6: 'Each / Every / Either / Neither / One / Anyone / Somebody' → Singular Verb

এই words সবসময় Singular Noun + Singular Verb + Singular Pronoun (he/his/her) নেয়।

Each student has done his work. ✓ | Every boy and every girl was present. ✓

Rule 7: 'One of' + Plural Noun → Singular Verb

'One of' structure-এ Verb সবসময় Singular — কারণ Subject হলো 'One'।

One of the boys has done his work. ✓ | One of them is responsible. ✓

Rule 8: 'Many a / Many an' + Singular Noun → Singular Verb

'Many a/an' দিয়ে শুরু → Singular Noun + Singular Verb (অর্থ Plural হলেও)।

Many a student has failed. ✓ | Many an honest man has suffered. ✓

Rule 9: 'More than one' + Singular Noun → Singular Verb

More than one + Singular Noun → Singular Verb। কিন্তু More than two/three → Plural।

More than one man was present. ✓ | More than two men were present. ✓

Rule 10: Collective Noun — একসাথে কাজ → Singular | বিভক্ত → Plural

Rule 11: 'A number of' → Plural | 'The number of' → Singular

A number of + Plural Countable Noun → Plural Verb।

The number of + Plural Noun → Singular Verb (subject = 'the number')।

Rule 12: 'Amount of / Quantity of / Percentage of' + Uncountable → Singular Verb

The amount of money is not sufficient. ✓ | The quantity of food was small. ✓

The percentage of marks was very low. ✓ | কিন্তু: Ninety percent of the students were present. ✓

Rule 13: Fraction / Part / Percentage + Noun → Noun অনুযায়ী Verb

Rule 14: Verb-এর আগে মূল Subject চেনো — Preposition phrase উপেক্ষা করো

Subject + [Prepositional phrase] + Verb — Prepositional phrase বাদ দিয়ে মূল Subject দেখো।

The quality of apples is good. (Subject = quality ✓) | He and not his parents is guilty. ✓

Rule 15: Relative Pronoun (who/which/that) → Antecedent অনুযায়ী Verb

Relative Pronoun-এর Verb নির্ভর করে তার Antecedent-এর Number ও Person-এর উপর।

⛔ 'One of the + Plural + that/who' → Plural Verb

She is one of the noblest women that has ever lived. ✗ (antecedent = women)

She is one of the noblest women that have ever lived. ✓

কিন্তু: He is the only one of the boys that has the answer. ✓ (only one → Singular)

Rule 16: Always Plural (সবসময় Plural Verb) — 's' থাকলেও

Scissors, Tongs, Trousers, Pants, Pyjamas, Shorts, Spectacles, Goggles, Binoculars, Pliers, Bellows, Gallows, Shears, Alms, Amends, Archives, Arrears, Congratulations, Embers, Fireworks, Lodgings, Outskirts, Proceeds, Remains, Savings, Surroundings, Thanks, Tidings, Troops, Wages (পরিশ্রমিক অর্থে), Valuables, Belongings

Rule 17: Always Singular — Plural দেখতে কিন্তু Singular Verb

রোগ: Measles, Mumps, Rickets, Shingles | খেলা: Billiards, Darts, Draughts | বিষয়: Physics, Mathematics, Economics, Ethics, Politics, Statistics, Linguistics, Acoustics, Athletics, Phonetics

বিষয় হিসেবে: Statistics is an interesting subject. (Singular) ✓

তথ্য হিসেবে: Statistics have revealed many scams. (Plural) ✓

Mathematics, Politics-ও এভাবে দুটি অর্থে ব্যবহার হতে পারে।

Rule 18: Singular দেখতে কিন্তু সবসময় Plural Verb

Cattle, Cavalry, Infantry, Poultry, Peasantry, Children, Gentry, Police, People, Vermin — এদের 's' নেই, কিন্তু Plural Verb নেয়।

Cattle are grazing. ✓ | Police have arrested the suspect. ✓ | The infantry have marched. ✓

Rule 19: Uncountable Nouns → Singular Verb | Article A/An ব্যবহার নয়

Furniture, Advice, Work, Evidence, Equipment, News, Information, Luggage, Baggage, Poetry, Knowledge, Scenery, Traffic, Music, Behaviour — সবই Uncountable।

The news is good. ✓ | Your advice was helpful. ✓ | The furniture is expensive. ✓

Rule 20: 'No + Noun' → Noun অনুযায়ী Verb

No + Uncountable → Singular: No air is present. ✓

No + Singular Countable → Singular: No student was present. ✓

No + Plural Countable → Plural: No students were interested. ✓

Rule 21: Money / Time / Distance / Weight / Period = একক হিসেবে → Singular Verb

একটি পরিমাণ/দূরত্ব/সময় যখন এককভাবে বোঝানো হয় তখন Singular Verb।

Five thousand rupees is a handsome amount. ✓ (পরিমাণ = একক)

Ten miles is a long distance. ✓ | Two hours is enough. ✓

কিন্তু: Five thousand rupees have been spent on commodities. ✓ (টাকাগুলো বিতরণ → Plural)

Rule 22: 'All' → Context অনুযায়ী Singular বা Plural

Rule 23: Subjunctive Mood — 'I wish / As if / As though / If' + were

I wish, I were a bird. ✓ | If he were rich, he would help others. ✓

He acts as if he were the boss. ✓ | Suppose he were here. ✓

Rule 24: Optative Sentence → Plural Verb (Singular Subject হলেও)

God save the king! ✓ | Long live the Queen! ✓ | May God bless you! ✓

Rule 25: 'The + Adjective' = Plural Subject → Plural Verb

The + Adjective = একটি শ্রেণীর মানুষ → Plural। The poor, The rich, The blind, The deaf।

The poor need help. ✓ | The blind were given special seats. ✓

② 'People' vs 'Peoples'

People = একটি দেশের মানুষ → Plural: The people of Bangladesh are hardworking. ✓

Peoples = বিভিন্ন জাতি → Plural: The peoples of Asia have diverse cultures. ✓

③ 'Fish' vs 'Fishes'

Fish = একই প্রজাতির একাধিক মাছ: There are many fish in the pond. ✓

Fishes = বিভিন্ন প্রজাতির মাছ: There are many fishes in the aquarium. ✓

④ 'We each' — বিশেষ গঠন

Plural Subject + each → Plural Verb | 'each' ব্যবহার হয় Verb-এর পরে, Subject-এর আগে নয়।

We each have a duty towards our nation. ✓ | We have each advised him. ✓

⑤ 'Both' সবসময় দুজনের জন্য

Both = শুধু দুজনের জন্য। 'Both' + not = 'Neither'।

Both of them did not take the exam. ✗ → Neither of them took the exam. ✓

⑥ 'One' Pronoun হলে 'one's/oneself' ব্যবহার

One should keep one's promise. ✓ | One should do one's duty oneself. ✓

One should keep his promise. ✗ (Formal English-এ 'his' নয়, 'one's' ব্যবহার করো।)

⑦ 'Series / Species / Aircraft / Counsel / Deer / Sheep' — Same form

এই nouns-এর Singular ও Plural একই রূপ। Verb context বুঝে ব্যবহার করো।

One series is complete. ✓ | Two series are complete. ✓ | A sheep is grazing. ✓ | Many sheep are grazing. ✓
