1. Subjunctive Mood — সংজ্ঞা ও পরিচিতি

Verb-এর Mood বলতে বোঝায় speaker যেভাবে কোনো বিষয় প্রকাশ করেন। English Grammar-এ তিনটি প্রধান Mood রয়েছে:

সুতরাং, Subjunctive Mood হলো এমন এক Mood যা দিয়ে আমরা প্রকাশ করি:

① কাল্পনিক / অবাস্তব পরিস্থিতি (hypothetical situations)

② ইচ্ছা, আকাঙ্ক্ষা, দোয়া (wishes, desires, prayers)

③ প্রস্তাব, সুপারিশ, দাবি, নির্দেশ (proposals, demands, orders)

④ শর্তমূলক বাক্য — If, Unless, Lest সহ conditionals

Present Subjunctive তৈরি হয় Verb-এর base form (dictionary form) দিয়ে — subject যাই হোক না কেন।

3.1 যে Verbs-এর পরে Present Subjunctive ব্যবহার হয়

1. The doctor suggested that the patient rest for a week.

➤ ডাক্তার পরামর্শ দিলেন যে রোগীর এক সপ্তাহ বিশ্রাম নেওয়া উচিত। ("rest" — base form, "rests" নয়)

2. The committee recommended that the bill be passed immediately.

➤ কমিটি সুপারিশ করল যে বিলটি অবিলম্বে পাস করা হোক। ("be passed" — passive subjunctive)

3. It is essential that every student submit the form by Friday.

➤ প্রতিটি শিক্ষার্থীর শুক্রবারের মধ্যে ফর্ম জমা দেওয়া অপরিহার্য। ("submit" — 3rd person হলেও "submits" নয়)

4. The judge demanded that the witness tell the truth.

➤ বিচারক সাক্ষীকে সত্য বলতে আদেশ দিলেন।

5. The manager insisted that the report be ready before Monday.

➤ ম্যানেজার জোর দিলেন যে সোমবারের আগে রিপোর্ট প্রস্তুত থাকতে হবে।

6. It is vital that the patient not eat anything before the surgery.

➤ অস্ত্রোপচারের আগে রোগীর কিছু না খাওয়া অত্যন্ত জরুরি। ("not eat" — negative subjunctive)

7. The teacher requested that all students be silent during the exam.

➤ শিক্ষক অনুরোধ করলেন যে সকল শিক্ষার্থী পরীক্ষার সময় নীরব থাকুক।

8. It is imperative that he appear in court tomorrow.

➤ তার আদালতে উপস্থিত হওয়া আবশ্যিক। ("appear" — "appears" নয়)

9. The law requires that every citizen pay taxes honestly.

➤ আইন দাবি করে যে প্রতিটি নাগরিককে সততার সাথে কর দিতে হবে।

➤ সে প্রস্তাব রাখল যে সভা পরবর্তী নোটিশ পর্যন্ত মুলতবি করা হোক।

4. Past Subjunctive — অতীত সাবজাংক্টিভ

Past Subjunctive ব্যবহার হয় বর্তমান বা ভবিষ্যৎ সম্পর্কে কোনো অসত্য কল্পনা বা ইচ্ছা প্রকাশ করতে।

4.1 "I wish / If only" — বর্তমান অসাধ্য ইচ্ছা

11. I wish I were a bird.

➤ আমি যদি একটি পাখি হতাম! (বাস্তবে আমি পাখি নই)

12. I wish he were here right now.

➤ আমি চাইতাম সে এখন এখানে থাকুক। (কিন্তু সে নেই)

13. If only she were more careful!

➤ যদি সে আরেকটু সতর্ক হতো!

14. He wishes he were the president of the country.

➤ সে চায় সে দেশের প্রেসিডেন্ট হতো।

15. If only I were ten years younger!

➤ যদি আমি দশ বছর ছোট হতাম!

4.2 "As if / As though" — অবাস্তব তুলনা

"As if" এবং "as though" ব্যবহার হয় যখন কেউ এমন কিছুর মতো আচরণ করে যা আসলে সত্য নয়।

16. He talks as if he were the boss.

➤ সে এমনভাবে কথা বলে যেন সে বস। (আসলে সে বস নয়)

17. She behaves as though she were a queen.

➤ সে এমন আচরণ করে যেন সে রানী।

18. He looks as if he were seriously sick.

➤ সে দেখতে মনে হচ্ছে সে মারাত্মক অসুস্থ।

4.3 "Would rather" — পছন্দ প্রকাশে

20. I would rather you came with me.

➤ আমি বরং চাইতাম তুমি আমার সাথে আসো। ("came" — past form)

21. She would rather he stayed at home tonight.

➤ সে চাইত সে আজ রাতে বাড়িতে থাকুক।

22. I would rather you did not tell anyone about this.

➤ আমি চাইতাম তুমি কাউকে এটা না বলো।

4.4 "It's time / It's high time" — সময়ের জরুরিতা

23. It is time you went to bed.

➤ তোমার এখন ঘুমাতে যাওয়ার সময় হয়েছে। ("went" — past form)

24. It is high time he apologized for his behaviour.

➤ তার ক্ষমা চাওয়ার এখনই উপযুক্ত সময়।

25. It is time the government took strong action against corruption.

➤ সরকারের দুর্নীতির বিরুদ্ধে শক্ত পদক্ষেপ নেওয়ার সময় এসেছে।

26. It is high time you started studying seriously for the exam.

➤ তোমার পরীক্ষার জন্য গুরুত্বের সাথে পড়া শুরু করার সময় হয়ে গেছে।

5. Past Perfect Subjunctive — অতীত অনুশোচনা

অতীতে যা ঘটেনি তা যদি ঘটত — এই ধরনের অনুশোচনা বা কল্পনা প্রকাশ করতে Past Perfect Subjunctive ব্যবহার হয়।

27. I wish I had studied harder for the exam.

➤ আমি যদি পরীক্ষার জন্য আরো কঠিনভাবে পড়তাম! (কিন্তু পড়িনি)

28. If only she had told me the truth earlier.

➤ যদি সে আগে আমাকে সত্যি বলত!

29. I wish we had left the party earlier last night.

➤ আমি চাইতাম আমরা গত রাতে পার্টি থেকে আগে চলে আসতাম।

30. He behaved as if he had never met me before.

➤ সে এমন আচরণ করল যেন সে আগে কখনো আমার সাথে দেখা করেনি।

কিছু Subjunctive Expression এতটাই প্রচলিত যে এগুলো fixed idiom হিসেবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। Exam-এ বারবার আসে।

33. Come what may, I will never give up on my dreams.

➤ যাই হোক না কেন, আমি কখনো আমার স্বপ্ন ছেড়ে দেব না।

34. God bless this nation and its people always.

➤ ঈশ্বর এই জাতি ও তার জনগণকে সবসময় আশীর্বাদ করুন।

35. Be that as it may, we cannot ignore the evidence.

➤ যা-ই হোক না কেন, আমরা প্রমাণ উপেক্ষা করতে পারি না।

36. Heaven forbid that anything should happen to her children.

7. Conditional Subjunctive — if, unless, lest, in case…

7.1 Type 2 Conditional (Present/Future Unreal)

37. If I were you, I would accept the offer immediately.

➤ আমি যদি তুমি হতাম, আমি সাথে সাথে অফারটি গ্রহণ করতাম।

38. If she were here, she could help us with the project.

➤ সে যদি এখানে থাকত, সে প্রকল্পে আমাদের সাহায্য করতে পারত।

7.2 Type 3 Conditional (Past Unreal)

40. If I had known, I would have called you immediately.

➤ আমি জানলে তোমাকে সাথে সাথে ফোন করতাম।

41. If she had studied harder, she would have passed the exam.

➤ সে যদি আরো কঠিনভাবে পড়ত, সে পরীক্ষায় পাস করত।

42. If the soldiers had arrived earlier, the battle would have been won.

➤ সৈন্যরা আগে পৌঁছলে যুদ্ধ জেতা যেত।

7.3 "Lest" — ভয় বা সতর্কতার প্রকাশ

43. He ran fast lest he should miss the train.

➤ সে দ্রুত দৌড়াল যাতে ট্রেন না মিস করে।

44. Study hard lest you should fail the exam.

➤ কঠিনভাবে পড়ো যাতে পরীক্ষায় ফেল না করো।

45. She kept quiet lest she should be misunderstood by others.

➤ সে চুপ করে থাকল যাতে অন্যরা ভুল না বোঝে।

46. Walk carefully lest you should fall on the wet floor.

➤ সাবধানে হাঁটো যাতে ভেজা মেঝেতে পড়ে না যাও।

8. Tricky & Uncommon Rules — কঠিন ও অপরিচিত নিয়মাবলি

এই নিয়মগুলো বেশিরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী জানে না, কিন্তু BCS ও Bank Job Exam-এ এগুলো থেকে প্রশ্ন আসে।

Rule 8.1 — Inverted Conditional (Were / Had / Should + Subject)

"If" বাদ দিয়ে Were / Had / Should প্রথমে বসিয়ে formal conditional তৈরি করা যায়।

47. Were I rich, I would build a school. (= If I were rich…)

➤ আমি ধনী হলে একটি স্কুল তৈরি করতাম।

48. Had she known, she would have acted differently. (= If she had known…)

➤ সে জানলে ভিন্নভাবে কাজ করত।

49. Should you need help, please call me. (= If you should need help…)

➤ সাহায্যের প্রয়োজন হলে আমাকে ডাকো।

Rule 8.2 — Negative Subjunctive (not + bare V1)

Subjunctive-এর Negative করতে "do not" নয়, শুধু "not" + base verb ব্যবহার হয়।

50. The doctor recommended that she not take any medication without advice.

➤ ডাক্তার পরামর্শ ছাড়া কোনো ওষুধ না নেওয়ার সুপারিশ করলেন।

Rule 8.3 — Passive Subjunctive (be + V3)

Subjunctive-এ Passive Voice তৈরিতে "is/are/was" নয়, শুধু "be" ব্যবহার হয়।

51. The committee ordered that the file be submitted within 24 hours.

➤ কমিটি আদেশ দিল যে ফাইলটি ২৪ ঘণ্টার মধ্যে জমা দিতে হবে।

Rule 8.4 — Wish + Would — ভবিষ্যৎ ইচ্ছা বা বিরক্তি

"wish + would" ব্যবহার হয় যখন ভবিষ্যৎ পরিবর্তনের ইচ্ছা বা অন্যের আচরণ নিয়ে বিরক্তি প্রকাশ করা হয়।

52. I wish it would stop raining so we can go out.

➤ আমি চাইতাম বৃষ্টি থামুক যাতে আমরা বের হতে পারি।

53. I wish you would be quiet for once!

➤ আমি চাইতাম তুমি একটু চুপ থাকো! (বিরক্তি)

Rule 8.5 — Mixed Conditionals with Subjunctive

Type 2 এবং Type 3 Conditional মিশিয়ে বলা যায় — অতীত কারণ, বর্তমান ফলাফল:

➤ আমি যদি ওষুধ খেতাম, এখন সুস্থ থাকতাম। (অতীতে খাইনি → বর্তমানে অসুস্থ)

Rule 8.6 — Suppose / Supposing / What if — Hypothetical

56. Suppose she were to arrive late, what would you do?

➤ ধরো সে দেরিতে আসলে, তুমি কী করতে?

57. Supposing he had not come, what would have happened?

➤ ধরো সে না আসলে কী হতো?

Rule 8.7 — For fear that / In order that

59. She kept silent for fear that she should make matters worse.

➤ সে চুপ থাকল এই ভয়ে যে পরিস্থিতি আরো খারাপ হবে।

60. He left early in order that he might catch the first train.

➤ সে আগে বেরিয়ে গেল যাতে প্রথম ট্রেন ধরতে পারে।

Rule 8.8 — Concessive Subjunctive (Literary/Formal)

61. Whether he be rich or poor, he is my friend.

➤ সে ধনী হোক বা গরিব হোক, সে আমার বন্ধু। (formal/literary)

62. However hard he try, he cannot beat her talent.

➤ সে যতই কঠিনভাবে চেষ্টা করুক, তার প্রতিভাকে হারাতে পারবে না।
